Post-Surgical Scar Treatment: Recommendations and Prevention

Surgical scars, if not properly managed, can have both physical and emotional impacts on patients. Thankfully, there are several effective options to improve scar appearance and prevent future complications.

THE ROLE OF A PLASTIC SURGEON

Plastic surgeons, as skin specialists, can:

Apply innovative treatments with hyaluronic acid directly during surgery to optimise scar management.

Enhance the appearance of existing pathological scars.

Provide guidance on wound care immediately after suture removal to prevent pathological scars, such as hypertrophic scars and keloids.

TYPES OF SCARS

Physiological scars

  • Immature scars:
Develop within the first 6-12 months. These scars are typically red, itchy or painful, and slightly raised. This is a critical phase for intervention.
  • Mature scars:
Stabilise after approximately one year, becoming flat and lighter in colour. Once mature, scars cannot be further modified.

Pathological scars

  • Hypertrophic scars:
Red, itchy or painful, and raised but remain within the boundaries of the original wound.
  • Keloid scars:
    Extend beyond the original incision.

In both cases, it is crucial to consult a Plastic Surgeon promptly to initiate effective treatment.

PREVENTION AND MANAGEMENT

To prevent pathological scarring, beginning the treatment is recommended as soon as the sutures are removed.

Silicone sheets or patches

  • Cut a strip matching the scar size and apply nightly for at least six months.

Total sunblock SPF 50+

  • Apply sunscreen with SPF 50+ daily to prevent UV-induced pigmentation, even in cloudy weather.

Scar massage

  • Massage the scar firmly with moisturising cream 2-3 times daily for several months until it becomes soft and blends with the surrounding skin.
